Balancing the needs of the individual against the needs of the team is never easy – especially when the teams are made up of such capable and highly skilled individuals. Just one of the problems is how much authority to exert.
Too much authority?
Abraham Lincoln said that nearly all people can stand adversity, but if you want to test a person’s character, give him or her power. Overused authority has such a negative short term impact that it usually gets noticed. However, many people shy away from exerting enough authority because they don’t want to be seen as a dictator or stifle new ideas.
Without the appropriate authority, sometimes energy gets focused on internal competition. There are not many pithy quotes about authority being underused but it has a long term effect:

● The group loses focus
● People get demotivated
